PROV Agencies

An Agency is an administrative unit that has or has had responsibility for the provision of at least one aspect of government administration. Each Agency generally has an independent recordkeeping system. Information in the PROV model will help you to understand the Agency as a creator of records. For example, VA 2807 State Coroner’s Office.

Wills, Probate and Administration Records 1841-1925

PROV, VPRS 28 & PROV, VPRS 7591
Wills and probate records created between 1841 and 1925 have been indexed and are being digitised and made available online free of charge.  Public Record Office Victoria (PROV), the Genealogical Society of Utah and the Victorian Association of Family History Organisations are indexing wills and probate records up until 1992.  The 1926 – 1992 portion of the Victorian Probate Index will be completed and made available online in late 2009.

Historic Plan Collection

PROV, VPRS 8168
The kinds of historical information often found on these “historical” plans include:
early descriptions of soils and native vegetation
location of huts, fences, gardens and other capital improvements made by squatters
location of other buildings
tracks used by original settlers
reserves set aside for public use
early place names
location of pastoral runs
ship wrecks
the general progress of European settlement at various times
progress of cadastral, geodetic and physiographic surveys at particular times
Intending users should understand that not all of the above features will appear on any one plan. In many cases the cadastral information is central, and all other details are incidental.
Once you have identified a plan of interest, you can use the codes contained in the searchable database to ascertain which topographic features are included on the plan.
AD hydrographic interest
C cadastral features
DA geological features
NR road engineering
PC rail or tramways
B buildings plotted
S soils and/or vegetation described

All of the negatives in the various processed consignments of this series have been imaged and can be accessed online. The online images can be searched and accessed through a database index on the PROV website.

Building Service Agency Plans (1853 to 1998)

The Public Works Department was responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of Victorian Government buildings such as schools, mental hospitals, government offices and other public buildings. PROV holds the plans created by the Public Works Department and its successor agency, the Building Services Agency (BSA). The drawings date from 1853 to 1998 and are a valuable resource for researching a range of properties in Victoria.
Drawing categories include Architectural, Civil and Hydraulic Services, Electrical Services, Landscape, Mechanical Services, Structural, Standard drawings and Survey.  Details show site plans, elevations, sections, floor plans, fitments, structural works, roof plans and site survey plans. Service drawings include water supply, sewerage, stormwater, drainage, gas supply, civil works, electrical services including power and lighting, fire services, and mechanical services including equipment, boilers, fuel tanks, heating, air conditioning and ventilation.

Otway Land Selection Applicants 1880-1900

This dataset contains information drawn from VPRS 440, 626, 5357 and 5714. It refers to the applications for land in the Otways under the Land Acts of 1878, 1884, 1890 and 1898, and shows who the applicants were, their address and occupation at times of application, and the dates and outcomes of their applications. For those who were successful in being recommended land, it also shows the outcome in terms of licence and lease dates, forfeit, Crown Grant etc. The information could also be used, for example, to determine which plots of land were selected, and when.
